Friday July 24 2015 MZBQ to Jo'Burg

This morning was our final visit to Communities of Fusion, just outside of Nampula, Mozambique. The 70 or so students at the Rapale International School sang for us under the trees in the center courtyard of the school compound, and we sang for them!

Then Scott Marquis showed us the crocodile farm where they’re raising about 2,000 young crocs for meat and leather. Oh, and it also helps them when chickens die in the broiler operation, which is another part of this very unique ministry. Luis Vitton has already contracted with this group to buy their leather. The next pair of crocodile-skin shoes, belt or purse you purchase might just be from this farm here in Mozambique!

Andrew and Claire Cunningham of Communities of Fusion. Such gracious hosts.

During the two-hour flight to Johannesburg, it looked like just about everyone in the group had a snooze. Once through customs, our formers guides, Mike and Mike (father and son team) were there to meet us, get us on the coach and take us to the 5-star Michelangelo hotel in Jo-Burg. It’s a rough life, but someone has to do it.

Tonight we had a wonderful meal together in the hotel dining room. While eating, a young couple next to us got engaged and we were there to witness it (she said “yes”).

We were also joined by representatives from AROS, an Afrikaaner college here in South Africa that trains teachers. AROS in English stands for “Academy of Reformed Studies and Training.” Dordt’s very own Dr. Tim Van Soelen was here a few months ago to meet with school representatives and help pave the way for tonight. After the meal, President Hoekstra and representatives of AROS signed letters of friendship. This signing ceremony was exciting to witness because it’s a tangible display of cooperation from two institutions who desire to train teachers for God’s glory!

Myra Heibult, part of our tour, just finished up six years as a member of Dordt’s board. President Hoekstra honored her with a plaque to commemorate her service to Dordt College.
