Tuesday July 21 Part II (with Pictures)

Mike Smuts (Sr) keeping the group informed of our whereabouts, what’s coming next, and the fascinating history of South Africa.

The Family that Travels Together … We’re delighted to have siblings on the trip. John and Judy Vander Woude, Joanne and Koos Brouwer and Etta de Jong. John, Joanne and Etta are siblings. This picture is taken at the base of Table Mountain. Because of the wind, the gondolas were not running this morning.

We’re standing on Signal Hill, with Table Mountain behind us. Cape Town is below and that speck of land in the water is Robbins Island, where Nelson Mandela spent 26 years in prison for “high treason” against the Apartheid government.

Standing in front of the Anglican Cathedral in downtown Cape Town. This was Bishop Desmond Tutu’s pulpit, literally, to speak to the nation against the injustices of Apartheid. Mike told us that Tutu is still very active in speaking out against injustice anywhere he sees it in post-Apartheid South Africa.

Time for winetasting and a meal. We had a delightful time at the Neethlingshof Estate outside of Stellenbosch, sampling their excellent wines and enjoying a wonderful meal of Malay-influenced cuisine. We enjoyed a pungent curry dish, topped with egg, paired with an estate wine, in an historic building with a thatched roof.

One of the downtown streets in Stellenbosch, and the front of the Theological Seminary, part of the Dutch Reformed Church. Approximately 300 undergrads study here, plus graduate students from around the world. Stellenbosch is predominately Afrikaans people, about 70% white people. Thanks to the influence of French Huguenots, wine is a big part of the industry here.
